Cognition and Communication Are Closely Connected

Thinking skills such as memory and attention often shape how someone communicates and manages daily tasks. Not everyone experiences every change listed here.

    Following Conversations

Keeping up with the flow of a conversation can become more difficult.

    Remembering Information

Holding onto details from a conversation or instructions may be harder.

    Staying on Topic

Maintaining or shifting the focus of conversation can be challenging.

    Organizing Thoughts

Putting ideas into a clear, logical order may take more effort.

    Completing Multi-Step Tasks

Sequences of household or daily tasks can become harder to finish.

    Managing Schedules

Tracking appointments and routines may require more support.

    Problem-Solving

Working through everyday decisions can take longer or feel less clear.

    Communicating Efficiently

Expressing thoughts clearly and at a useful pace may be affected.

    Areas Cognitive-Communication Therapy May Address

    Organization

Strategies for organizing information, plans, schedules and everyday responsibilities.

    Problem-Solving

Work on functional reasoning and decision-making tasks when appropriate.

    Processing Information

Practice understanding, retaining and using information during everyday activities.

    Communication in Daily Life

Apply cognitive strategies to conversations, appointments, household routines and family interactions.

Why Cognitive Therapy in the Home Can Be Practical

Working in the home lets therapy use the person’s real calendars, reminders, and routines so strategies carry over into daily life.

    Using the person's real calendar
    Organizing appointments
    Remembering daily routines
    Following household steps
    Communicating with family
    Managing written reminders
    Navigating familiar daily tasks

Therapy is individualized, and independent medication management is not assumed to be appropriate for every patient.

    Who May Experience Cognitive-Communication Changes

Challenges may occur in some adults after stroke, brain injury, neurological conditions, illness or hospitalization, or certain progressive conditions. Therapy does not reverse dementia or neurodegenerative disease, but it may support practical daily function and communication. Working With Families and Caregivers

Family involvement can help reinforce communication strategies and routines when appropriate and authorized. A speech-language pathologist can help caregivers understand how to support daily function without taking over tasks the person can still manage.
