Voice Changes Can Affect Everyday Communication
Voice changes can have many different causes. These experiences may affect how someone participates in conversation and daily life.
Reduced Volume
A voice that is softer or harder for others to hear.
Vocal Fatigue
Speaking may become tiring, especially over longer conversations.
Difficulty Projecting
Being heard across a room or in group settings may be harder.
Changes in Vocal Quality
The sound or feel of the voice may change for the individual.
Increased Effort
Producing voice may require more effort than it used to.
Difficulty Being Heard
Communication partners may ask for repetition more often.
This list is not a diagnosis. Voice changes can have many causes, and appropriate evaluation helps determine the right next steps.

Breath-Voice Coordination
Practice coordinating airflow and voice production when appropriate.
Vocal Endurance
Strategies for managing voice demands during daily activities.
Conversation

Treatment does not prescribe a universal voice exercise program. Strategies are individualized based on clinical findings.
Why Voice Therapy at Home Can Be Useful
Voice is used during real conversations at home. Practicing in that environment helps strategies carry over into daily communication.
Voice Changes May Need Medical Evaluation
Unexplained, persistent, or concerning voice changes may warrant evaluation by an appropriate medical professional such as an ENT/otolaryngologist. Speech therapy does not replace appropriate medical evaluation, and a referral may be recommended before or during therapy depending on the nature and history of the voice change.
Voice Changes With Parkinson’s Disease
Reduced voice volume and other voice changes can occur in some people with Parkinson’s disease. Learn more about our Parkinson’s speech and voice therapy. Not all voice changes are related to Parkinson’s, and voice changes can have many different causes.
