How MS May Affect Everyday Movement

MS can affect people differently and symptoms can shift over time. Not everyone experiences every change listed here.

    Fatigue

MS-related fatigue can make everyday activity feel more tiring and variable day to day.

    Weakness

Reduced strength in the legs or body can affect standing and walking.

    Balance Changes

Steadiness and postural control may shift, especially when standing or turning.

    Walking Difficulty

Stepping, gait pattern, or walking endurance may be affected.

    Endurance Limitations

Activity tolerance may be lower, making daily routines more tiring.

    Coordination Changes

Controlled, precise movement can become more challenging for some people.

    Transfer Difficulty

Getting in and out of chairs, beds, or the car may require more effort.

Understanding which movements are most affected helps shape an individualized plan. Learn more about our in-home physical therapy services.

    Managing Energy While Staying Active

Because MS-related fatigue can vary from day to day, sessions are individualized and may include pacing strategies and gradual progression based on the person’s current energy and abilities. Treatment is adjusted to each individual rather than following a rigid protocol.

    What PT May Work On

Each plan is built around the person’s current abilities, symptoms, and goals.

    Strength

Focus on the legs, hips, core, and muscle groups that support everyday movement.

    Balance

Exercises and strategies designed around steadiness and postural control.

    Walking

Work on stepping quality, endurance, and safe movement through the home.

    Endurance

Gradually build tolerance for daily activity based on current abilities and energy.

    Transfers

Practice getting safely in and out of chairs, beds, and other everyday positions.

    Functional Mobility

Connect movement practice to real household activities and routines.

Adapting Daily Movement Around Strength and Energy

Because MS-related energy and strength can shift from day to day, treatment in the home can be paced to match how the person is actually feeling and moving that day.

With MS, a strategy that worked well one week may need adjusting the next. Practicing in the home lets the physical therapist see how the person moves through their own walking distances, stairs, and transfer surfaces, and adapt the plan around current energy rather than a fixed schedule.

The focus is on conserving effort while maintaining independence — finding efficient ways to manage stairs, get in and out of bed, and move through daily routines so that activity stays sustainable over time.

    Maintaining Participation and Independence

Physical therapy can support staying active and involved in meaningful activities within the person’s current abilities. This approach does not stop, slow, or alter the progression of multiple sclerosis.

Balance and steadiness are often a key focus. Learn more about our balance and gait physical therapy or our fall prevention physical therapy. For adults rebuilding strength after a period of reduced activity, our deconditioning physical therapy may also be relevant.
