Why Movement Can Feel Different After a Fracture
Immobilization, surgery, and reduced activity can affect the body in ways that linger after the bone has begun to heal. Not everyone experiences every change listed here.
Weakness
Muscles can weaken during immobilization or reduced activity.
Stiffness
Joints and tissues may feel stiff after time in a cast or brace.
Reduced Endurance
Activity tolerance may be lower, making daily routines more tiring.
Altered Walking
Walking patterns may change during recovery or while using assistive devices.
Fear of Falling
Concern about falling again may lead to moving less over time.
Reliance on Assistive Devices
Using a walker, cane, or brace can change how everyday movement feels.
Understanding what has changed helps shape an individualized plan. Learn more about our in-home physical therapy services.
Following Medical Restrictions
Weight-bearing status, activity precautions, and any movement restrictions are followed according to the treating physician or surgeon’s guidance. Physical therapy does not override medical precautions and progresses only with appropriate clearance. Specific guidance should always come from the physician managing the fracture.
Rebuilding Strength and Mobility
After medical clearance, physical therapy may include gradual progression of strength, joint mobility, and functional movement based on the person’s current abilities. Progress is individualized and does not follow a universal timeline or promise accelerated bone healing.
Returning to Walking & Transfers
Treatment can connect movement practice to the real tasks the person performs at home each day.
Confidence After a Fall or Fracture
A fall or fracture can affect confidence as much as physical function. Physical therapy may address balance, safe movement, and steadiness through the home, though no program can guarantee that every fall will be prevented. Deconditioning During Recovery
Periods of immobilization or reduced activity during fracture recovery can contribute to deconditioning. For adults rebuilding strength and endurance after a period of inactivity, our deconditioning physical therapy may also be relevant.
Family & Caregiver Education
Practical guidance for the people who support safe movement between visits.
Movement Strategies
Caregivers can learn how to reinforce safe walking, transfers, and household activity.
Activity Guidance
Understanding how much activity is appropriate and how to encourage it safely.
Confidence Support
Encouragement that helps the client stay active and engaged in daily routines.
